Why Food Recovery matters
Food Recovery helps address two problems – food waste and hunger.
Nationally, 40% of all food is wasted. When food is wasted the valuable resources used for production like land, water, energy, and labor are also wasted. When food ends up in a landfill it breaks down into greenhouse gases. In fact, 6.7 percent of all global greenhouse gases come from food waste.
According to data from Feeding America, 7.9% of Ventura County residents were considered food insecure in 2016 including 16.1% of children.
By supporting food recovery, WFVC aims to alleviate hunger by increasing the quantity of food sources available to non-profits currently helping to serve our food insecure community members.
